Course overview and objectives
Setting out areas of construction and establishing accurate levels is a vital skill for landscapers and designers to master. This is a one day intensive course that combines theory and practice and will enable students to confidently interpret garden construction diagrams and use the equipment to set out .
The course will cover the following:
The principles of setting out and applying them in practice using a variety of modern and traditional techniques.
Interpreting site surveys, including datum points, scales and levels.
Modern and more traditional surveying equipment.
Setting out site feature areas including symmetrical and non-symmetrical shapes within a scheme.
Calculating volumes, areas and how this applies to project management and accurate project pricing.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course the students will:
Understand why accurate setting out and establishment of levels is so important to project delivery.
Understand how to operate both traditional dumpy and modern laser levels and know how to improvise if a level is unavailable.
Know how to establish primary and secondary datum points.
Know how to interpret a site survey drawing.
Know how to apply Pythagoras theorem to establish accurate right angles.
Know how to set out lines and levels to enable construction work to begin.
Know how to calculate volumes and areas from survey measurements and how to apply this to estimating and quoting.
Know what to put in their ‘setting out kit’ to cover all eventualities on site.

Classroom plus practical workshop sessions, ongoing engagement after the 1 day course.
GOOD TO KNOW
Free membership access (worth £50) to The Landscape Library for 6 months, for all course participants once they have attended a TASK Industry course (includes access to training resources, articles, features, templates, publications, advice notes, cross section drawings and mentorship) . Lunch is not included, we recommend you bring your own packed lunch for each day

There is currently no accommodation available at Lower End Farm for TASK students. There are plenty of local accommodation possibilities, please contact us for a range of options.
