This Course is the perfect garden design ‘taster’! 

Course tutor and garden design expert, David Stevens FSGD, FCI Hort leads students through the sequence of just how to design a garden, the pitfalls, the ‘tricks of the trade’ and the practical common sense things that will make your garden work for you. A combination of both theory and practice, looking at design ideas, construction, features and furnishings as well as seeing just what plants can be chosen for a whole range of situations, soil and microclimates.

Learning outcomes:

At the end of this course, attendees should be familiar with the following:

  • Understanding the basis of Garden Design. Space first and Plants second

  •  The analysis of ‘What You Have Got’ and ‘What Do You Want, in other words, Design is a sequential process.

  •  To be able to prepare a simple scale drawing.

  •  The importance of manipulating space, the elements of Tension, Mystery, and Surprise.

  •  Appreciating different garden styles and shapes.

  •  An Introduction to Planting – The importance of soils, different types, and soil treatments.

  •  Appreciating the planting sequence in terms of the profile, structure, and species.

  •  Understanding colour and how this can manipulate visual space.

  • Lunch is not included, we recommend you bring your own packed lunch for each day
