COURSE OVERVIEW

This 2 day course provides the ideal introduction to the skills involved in building a quality brick wall. All of the fundamental skills and theory are covered, from brick selection, ’The 3 Keys’, footings and foundations, bonding patterns, mixing the ideal mortar, pointing finishes and more. A brilliant way to learn one of the key landscaping skills and all taught by a leading industry expert.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course, students will:

  • Describe a range of brick types and their uses in landscaping

  • State the dimensions of a typical brick and describe the relationship between the dimensions in creating different bonding patterns

  • Identify a range of commonly used brick bonding patterns

  • Name the tools used in bricklaying and explain how they are used

  • Describe the process of installing footings and the relationship between the size/type of wall and the width/depth of the footings

  • Provide a verbal risk assessment for building a brick wall

  • State the importance of maintaining verticals/horizontals and (nominal) 10mm joints

  • Set a line and level for a wall using a line and pins

  • Name the ingredients used in a bricklaying mix and state how they are used

  • Create a suitable mortar mix for laying bricks

  • Construct a 1.8m long (8 bricks), 4-course high, whole-brick wall in running bond with a 2-brick return at one end

  • Know and be able to demonstrate 3 pointing finishes

  • Be able to describe 3 potential problems with brickwork and how they can be avoided/corrected

Classroom plus practical workshop sessions.

GOOD TO KNOW

Free membership access (worth £50) to The Landscape Library for 6 months, for all course participants once they have attended a TASK Industry course (includes access to training resources, articles, features, templates, publications, advice notes, cross section drawings and mentorship) .   • Lunch is not included, we recommend you bring your own packed lunch for each day

  • There is currently no accommodation available at Lower End Farm for TASK students. There are plenty of local accommodation possibilities, please contact us for a range of options.
