COURSE OVERVIEW

This practical and informative 3 day course offers a comprehensive and industry approved introduction to surveying, foundations, paving (including porcelain), brickwork and fencing.

The course will cover the following general landscaping principles:

  • Laying techniques, preparation of bases and sub-bases, calculating foundations, setting out of areas and levels, calculating falls, jointing systems for paving.

  • Constructing brick walls including the various bonds and coursing methods.

  • Laying and cutting techniques for natural stone and porcelain paving.

  • Finishing details of grout and pointing of brickwork and paved surfaces.

  • Learn aspects of installing fences

  • Safe use of machinery

 LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course, students will:

  • Know and be able to describe the advantages and disadvantages of health & safety at work, setting out, levels, brickwork, paving and fencing.

  • Understand the principles of site safety, organisation and professional working practices when landscaping.

  • Be able to risk assess the proposed work area for hazards and obstacles and know how to detect and work around underground services.

  • Know how to establish and make safe access route for materials, equipment etc

  • Be able to set areas using Pythagoras’ theorem.

  • Be able to calculate and set falls and gradients appropriate to the conditions and materials being used

  • Know how to excavate the intended areas accurately and dispose of spoil appropriately.

  • Understand and be able to describe the terms Sub-grade, Formation level, Sub-base, Base, Bedding course, Wearing course, loading capacities and the construction requirements for each.

  • Be able to lay an area of paving to a specified level and construct a low wall using block and brick.

  • Know and be able to execute a variety of jointing options and techniques for paving and brickwork.

All to within industry recognised tolerances and standards.

LEARNING FORMAT

Classroom plus practical workshop sessions.

GOOD TO KNOW

Free membership access (worth £50) to The Landscape Library for 6 months, for all course participants once they have attended a TASK Industry course (includes access to training resources, articles, features, templates, publications, advice notes, cross section drawings and mentorship) . Email alangsargent@gmail.com once you have attended the course to access your membership.

  • Lunch is not included, we recommend you bring your own packed lunch for each day

  • You will receive an automated email from our order system to confirm your booking.

  • One week before the date of the course, you will receive a course confirmation email with further information and course joining instructions which includes what to bring with you.

  • There is currently no accommodation available at Lower End Farm for TASK students. There are plenty of local accommodation possibilities, please contact us for a range of options.

  • Participants are required to have a minimum level 2 in English and Maths.
